Caroline Answers Your Too-Embarrassed-To-Ask Massage Questions
Communication is key when it comes to working with your massage therapist for the best results. Some of us aren’t shy to request a little more pressure or some extra time on the scalp, but there are other questions we might be too bashful to ask. I’m here to clear the air and get them out in the open - there’s nothing to be ashamed about when it comes to your body and its care!
Q: Should I take off 𝘢𝘭𝘭 my clothes, even my underwear?
A: You should undress to 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 comfort level! We massage therapists are trained to work through clothing, and will always drape you appropriately so that you feel secure and comfortable. It’s generally easier for us to work directly on the skin, but we won’t judge you either way. If you feel comfortable in your birthday suit, go for it.
Q: What if I get an erection during my massage?
A: It’s natural and nothing to be embarrassed about! Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, or “relaxation response”, can often result in an erection. You can try to ignore it and allow it to subside on its own. As long as it’s not accompanied by any inappropriate behavior, we’re cool.
Q: I forgot to shave my legs! Is that going to gross you out?
A: Not one bit. We massage hairy men all the time and they certainly don’t apologize for it! We care about the muscles under your skin, not what’s on the surface. Don’t sweat it.
Q: What if I fall asleep/snore/drool/fart/etc?
A: Your state of total relaxation is literally the best compliment we can receive (along with re-booking!) and means we’re doing our job right. Just let it go.
Q: What if I’m self-conscious about the way my body looks?
A: Please know that your massage is a safe and judgment-free space. We got into this line of work to help you feel BETTER, no matter what you look like! We are feeling for knots in your muscles, not passing judgment on your thighs. The human body is amazing and you are glorious just the way you are!!
