3 Stretches That Help with Sciatica

One of the main culprits of sciatica is a tight piriformis muscle. The piriformis is located in the buttocks and can cause sciatica pain if it becomes tight or inflamed. Massage therapy can help to relieve tension and reduce muscle spasms associated with the piriformis and sciatica, but stretching can help as well! Here are some stretches that can help alleviate sciatica pain:

1. Pigeon Pose

Start in a push-up position and bring one knee to your chest. Slide the ankle towards your opposite hand and lower your hips towards the ground. Keep the other leg extended behind you.

2. Figure Four Stretch

Lie on your back and cross one ankle over the opposite knee. Gently pull the knee towards your chest and hold onto the back of the thigh.

3. Seated Piriformis Stretch

Sit on a chair with your feet flat on the ground. Cross one ankle over the opposite knee and gently pull the knee towards your chest.

It is important to stretch gently and avoid any movements that cause pain. Consult a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise regimen.
